Alliance
for Chemical Safety
Member
Principles
All members of the Alliance for Chemical Safety (ACS)
are committed to a continuing effort to understand, minimize, and communicate
the risks associated with the chemicals manufactured, stored, used or
transported to and from industrial and commercial facilities in our community.
We pledge to continually encourage and support responsible operations and
management of these facilities according to the following principles:
-
Maintain a continuing dialogue with local citizens and industries to respond to their concerns about safety, health, and the environment, or other matters of interest.
-
Attempt to obtain feedback on the effectiveness of ACS public communication efforts.
-
Share relevant safety knowledge and lessons learned from chemical releases or incidents with other ACS members, industry, agencies and the community.
-
Participate, when possible, on ACS projects or programs that support the ACS mission.
In addition, industrial members
pledge to:
-
Operate their facilities in a manner that protects the environment and the health and safety of their employees and the public.
-
Make health, safety and environmental considerations a priority in their planning for all existing and new plants and processes.
-
Perform periodic assessments of process hazards; implement actions to minimize risk associated with chemical operations, including the possibility of human error.
-
Maintain current, complete documentation of process design, operating parameters, and procedures.
-
Implement documented maintenance and inspection programs that promote facility integrity.
-
Perform ongoing assessments of the potential risks to employees and local communities resulting from chemical incidents/accidents or other emergencies.
-
Educate their employees, local responders and agencies about their facility's emergency response plan and other safety, health and environmental programs.
-
Perform emergency exercises, at least annually, to test the operability of their facility's written emergency response plan.
-
Whenever possible, involve and/or co-ordinate these emergency exercises with the LEPC.
-
Counsel their customers on the safe use, transportation and disposal of chemical materials and products manufactured or used at their facilities.
Working together to effectively promote public understanding and involvement in chemical risk management
