2011 ACS Program

The 2011 Alliance Awards Banquet was held on January 12, 2011 at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College.  Our keynote speaker was Dr. Holland Jordan, Director of SOCMA’s ChemStewards program.  SOCMA is the Society of Chemical Manufacturers & Affiliates.  Dr. Jordan spoke about sustainability in the chemical manufacturing industry.

Thank you to our banquet sponsor - Frost Brown Todd LLC.

Three chemical safety awards were awarded.  The award recipients are listed below:

2010 Risk Reduction Award

awards

Jean Bagel of John Morrell & Co. (left) and Carl Deskins, 2010 Alliance Chair (right).

John Morrell & Co. received this award for improvements to its liquid smoke process.

John Morrell, a major U.S. meat manufacturer, uses liquid smoke to prepare many of its smoked meat products.

In April 2010, the company completed improvements to its liquid smoke delivery and handling systems, including leak repairs, filter improvements, addition of storage tanks, re-piping of the bulk line for better control and a new recycling system.

As a result, liquid smoke use has decreased by 41%, resulting in a lower on-site inventory and reduced employee exposure and risk.

2010 Risk Reduction Award

awards

Left to right:  Dr. Andy Maier of TERA, Dr. Bernard Gadagbui of TERA, Dr. Scott Dotson of NIOSH and Carl Deskins, 2010 Alliance Chair.

Dr. Scott Dotson of NIOSH and Dr. Bernard Gadagbui of Toxicology Excellence for Risk Assessment (TERA) earned a Risk Reduction Achievement Award for their work on new skin exposure guidelines for hazardous chemicals.

The new hazard-specific skin notations address the historical weaknesses associated with skin notations and are capable of providing warnings about the common aspects of health effects related to skin exposure, including systemic effects via absorption, direct irritant effects, and sensitization.

The INEOS Public Advisory Group (PAG) earned a Risk Communication Excellence Award for its long-term commitment to risk communication.

The PAG, in existence since 1989, is one of the longest running community advisory panels in the Greater Cincinnati area.  INEOS is a plastics manufacturer located in Addyston.

Comprised of local residents, community leaders and emergency responders, the PAG meets bi-monthly with plant management to discuss the plant’s environmental, health and safety performance.
